ABLE BEST 2009 – A SYNOPSIS



This national level programme aimed at encouraging young post-graduate and doctoral students in developing biotechnology entrepreneurship and exposing them to issues involved in commercialization of bio-science culminated in an entrepreneurship workshop at Bangalore from the 25th to 27th July 2009. Mr Shrikumar Suryanarayan, Director General ABLE mentored the conduct of the BEST programme right through its course.

The workshop was carefully designed to develop business skills such as finance and funding, IP protection and management, soft skills and HR management, and making business plans.

The highlight of the workshop was the sharing of real experiences by entreprenuers such as Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr. K K Narayanan, Dr. Bala Manian, Dr. Ravikumar, and Mr. Supreet Deshpande.

Dr. M. K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, addressed the twenty student teams which were shortlisted to attend the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, the participating teams made presentations to an eminent jury panel headed by Dr. Natesh, Senior Advisor, DBT.

Three teams were adjudged as winners to receive the prize money of Rs. 5 lakhs, Rs. 3 lakhs and Rs. 2 lakhs for the first, second and the third team respectively.

First prize: Team from Stanford India Biodesign, comprising Shitij Malhotra, Mansi Aggarwal and Pooja Singh, for their concept “Vein Location - Cost effective, non-invasive, easy to use portable device”

Second prize: Team from IIT Kharagpur, comprising Manoj Kumar Mandelia, Mohan Yama, Shobhit Singhal, Pulkit Anand, and Prateek Kumar Jain, for their concept “Localized operation of Bio cells using sewage to generate energy”

Third prize: Team from IIT Madras comprising Sayash Kumar, Hemanth Girirao, Nelson Vadassery, Srisailaja and Sowmya Lakshmy, for their concept “Algal Biofuel”

The winning teams will be given an opportunity to present their concepts at BioInvest 2009, the annual summit of Biotech entrepreneurs, professionals and institutional investors, at Mumbai on 5th Nov 2009.
