The Government of India constituted the DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY in 1986 with a mandate to promote and develop Biotechnology at academic & industry levels. The following Biotechnology-focused Research Institutes have been established:

Fermentation & Bioprocessing. (Established in 1984)

National Institute of Immunology New Delhi
Immunology (Established in 1987)

National Centre of Biological Sciences Bangalore
Molecular Biology & Stem Cell Research. (Established in 1991)

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research Bangalore
Human Genetics. (Established in 1998)

Centre for Biochemical Technology New Delhi
Genomics & Bioinformatics. (Established in 1997)
